Happy Mothers? Print Email

It's weird. We make comix regardless of the world around us, then lo-and-behold, we are infiltrated by the consensual reality. This week's comic was made unawares that it was mother's day. Strange enough is the coincidence that we massaged the content to fit the bill (although we didn't have to massage it much because....well there's already enough massaging in the comic itself).

Seriously, call your mom.

If you ever wondered how zoning decisions are enforced, look no further than this comic.

The last week has been uber-hectic for many of the Postmodern Sideshow staff. A bunch of us have been helping the utterly postmodern ranchera, Jill Huntsberger. Jill just had her thesis installation installed, and it was a doozy, but with the help of The Fruit-Bats and us web-slaves we were able to bring her over the edge of awesomeness. Congratulations to Jill on her amazing piece. We will add a link as soon as she documents it and posts it on the web. If she were to use a cocoa-camera, then she would chocument it.

I've got a secret Print Email

This week's comic is based upon a real building I walk past every once in awhile. From the side it's a normal brick building, but the front of the building in a wall of ridged sheet metal. I missed the front door the first time I saw it. The ensuing comic is what I thought was going on there.

It turns out though, that the wall actually opens up to reveal a very beautiful courtyard garden and a steel and glass two-story building a la Mies van der Rohe. I was amazed at how far from the truth I was. Instead of containing a predatory and disgusting techno-medieval leather pederast, it was home to someone who likes to throw black-tie events. Who knew. It makes me wonder how far off from the truth, my other creative musings are.

Double Dee starts a new job today, so let's wish him luck! In addition to being the creative director of the comix, he's an Electrical+Computer Engineer stuck in the automated test circuit.

Here I am... Print Email

...Rock me like a hurricane! New comic. It's based upon real life stories.

Speaking of real life stories and hurricanes, I went to mardi gras in 99. They have these drinks there called "Hurricanes", they're basically mountain dew flavored everclear. More Background: In New Orleans, they have these side door vending windows. When the bar fills up, they still serve alcohol out the side and they still make money off of the tourists. I was dumb enough to want to drink more green night-train, so I sauntered up to one of these windows. I didn't notice the "ye olde sauce" window hanging above me, but I sure noticed it when it landed on the ground after bouncing on my head. The combination of shock and alcohol kept me from hitting the pavement myself. To this day, I credit still being alive to being smart enough to refuse the free drink that was offered me as I handed the man his sign. Stick around. I'll tell you more stories about how I almost died.

Monkey See, Monkey Do Print Email
I don't know why. I have a fascination with hiding in dark places with masks on. My all time favorite being closets and gorilla costumes. The runner up is of course under the bed and a lobster hat. It's just me.

I hope you are all prepared for Smingus Dingus. For those of you who are lazy, it's a Polish holiday. The day after Easter, until 12 noon, youthful scamps of all ages can throw any amount of liquids at anyone in public, as many times as they want. The traditional vessel and fluid is bucket and water, but I'm sure you're creative enough to see some possibilities here. Personally, I'm going to use a watergun filled with...water.

I highly recommend the new Flaming Lips album. The lyrics are a little weird and sometimes simple, but the distortion they throw on the guitars and synths make the instruments sound so rich and full of soul. Best Quote from the album info:

"I sometimes will do a silly songwriter's trick - I'll act like I'm writing a song for someone else and on this track I was imagining Gwen Stefani... I pictured her singing it and imagined what kind of production would happen. Initially I called the song, when it was intended for Ms. Stefani, "I Like To Masturbate and Think Of Outer Space"."

Some professions elicit immediate stereotypes. Priests -> Child Molesters; Cops -> EgoDicks; Janitors -> Frame of reference to motivate students; Astronauts -> Assholes. This week's comix is about those asshole astronauts. If you were hoping we were going to do one about priests, stick around. I'm sure we'll get to it.

On a non-comix related note, I fixed the photostreams section. Now all the photos should appear at the correct aspect ratio. Use the menu to the left if you wanna see what's new, otherwise, check out the new comix.

This weeks comic is inspired visually from the Alan Moore series "Promethea". The content is inspired from somewhere in-between Elton John, High School, and Camus. Guaranteed to be 100% fart-joke free.

Dodge This! Print Email

Before I plug the comix (click on the image to the left), we'd like to thank all the new visitors to our site. We got slammed last week, with jaw-dropping stats. I hope you all enjoyed the site!

The additional traffic made us get off our asses and rework the site a bit. We've taken down any sections that haven't been updated in awhile. We're in the process of automating the whole site, so instead of hundreds of pages of sketchbook material, background, and lego pics collecting dust, they will be automagically posted to the site. Until that happens, those sections are down.

We've added a new section called photostreams. We're going to play around with the design, so we can continue to add our favorite photostreams. For now though, there's a lot of goodies up. It changes when people add photos, so come back often.(Ed's Note: The module we were using stopped working with flickr, because they changed their API. Screw them)

This weeks comic is an entertaining story about Matt's youth. Thanks for sharing the memories Matt. Thanks for having an "imaginary" party two weeks in a row and then canceling it. I "imaginarily" showed up at three in the morning and relieved myself on your couch. You should do something about that smell.

Oh, It's Convenient! Print Email

New Comix. We continue to follow the exploits of our favorite science project.

Nuff' Said (HAH!)

If you're still reading this, I saw V for Vendetta this weekend. I liked it. Regardless of whether you liked it, you should check out the graphic novel of the same name. Although Alan Moore is asking to take his name off both, it is still a fantastic read. It suffers from the same serendipitous success of Star Wars (episodes 4-6), where the imagined technology of the time gives it an entirely unique and amazing aesthetic.

One very large and important difference between the book and film is that in the book, everyone is near destitute and struggles to survive. Also the movie's changes introduce a few plot inconsistencies, but since I draw characters with three fingers in one frame and four in another frame, I am not one to point the blame. Then again, I do not have millions of dollars in budget (sorry to disappoint!).

Play that crap, one more time Print Email

This week's comix is a true life story about yours truly, and the Greek Disco scene in the late nineties (way down deep on the south side of Chicago).

It was a troubling time in my life, overly complicated by overpriveledged white folk acting like a bunch of degenerates. I believe the term is "White Trash". Now, I realize that I'm the pot calling the kettle black, what with comix about fart jokes and pedophiles, but those are fantasy. The people I'm talking about regularly called people from the Indian sub-continent smelly "darkies", made fun of fat chicks, and gathered around in a circle to sing "American Pie". Not everyone who is in a Fraternity is an asshole, but this comix isn't about the nice people.
