Music: Cadence Weapon Print Email

Cadence Weapon, Breaking Kayfabe, It's a great jam with a talented underground lyricist.

I was attracted to the album by hearing the track Black Hand which has some of the best background productions around. The hook on that track gets a little old, but the quality of the samples and instruments made me run to check out the rest of the album.

The rest album isn't as good as Black Hand, but it's still fairly fresh and off the beaten path. A lot of the music comes from synthesizers and has distinctive distorted leads throughout the tracks. At the most superficial level, the album is bumpy, has a lot of catchy refrains so you'll be playing it back through your head for days. The long term analysis of content doesn't leave one with the most poetic rap experience ever, but the man has talent and wordsmithing. Worth a listen.

Who would like this album: People who want to hear what a Canadian Rapper sounds like.

Who would hate this album: Hip-Hop snobs who only listen to music with samplers.

Craft: Essimar Papercraft Print Email

Essimar Papercraft

Esther is another artist that I met at Pitchfork this year. Her work is an esquisite collection of artistic paper (different than papercraft). Instead of using a brush, Esther employs various papers as her visual implementation. Utilizing printed images, color, and patterns combined with shape, and refactored into form, she masters an artform traditionally abandoned at kindergarten. She puts most traditional visual artists to shame. Her work is expressive and textured. I wouldn't be suprised if her look is copied via the zeitgeist into adversiting prettiness. Grab some up before she skyrockets into the collectable.

I met Essimar at Pitchfork. We were photographed together at our first meeting. It was published on the internet (below). My friend's friend from St. Louis found the picture and it found it's way to me. How postmodern can you get? 1) I look like a sweaty mess. 2) Esther looks extremely well composed considering the heat and the strain of having a good time.

Comic: Secret Whispers Print Email

This is one of a series of doodles I did while uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, and repeating for some work-related software that doesn't always take the first five times you install it. There is some voodoo command line instructions that never come with instructions, so they don't work whenever a new version come out. At least I got these doodles out of that deal.

Web: Creative Contest Print Email

Veer has a pretty awesome contest going on where you can use their webtool to create an isometric piece of art with some stock images. It's like a sandbox, but instead of matchbox cars and GI Joes, it's isometric stock art!

Also, check out their stock art. It's a beautiful!

Audiobook: Survivor Print Email

"Survivor" by Chuck Palahniuk is another winner from an author with a great catalog of work.

The novel starts at full adrenaline with the main character, Tender Branson, hijacking a plane and working backwards in time. You will despise, sympathize, and despise Tender several times over as this extraordinary character embodies the loneliness and misfit feelings we all encounter.

As always Palahniuk packs the novel full of quirky characters, imaginative jobs, and people obsessed with queer fascinations. For example, a low wage landscaper for yuppies too concerned with status to notice that their garden is populated with fake flowers...stolen from a morgue under the pretense of an artificial flower thesis.

This novel will astound you, your jaw will drop, and your heart will fill with adrenaline. I cannot recommend this book enough.

If you like your novels to be vanilla, then go no further.

If you enjoy standing reality on it's head to get a better view, then you will enjoy.

Recommended for all ages, teen to adult.

Craft: Year of the Potato Print Email

Eric is a really neat guy I met at Pitchfork last year (and this year) who has a fascination with potatoes. He's got some neat shirts for girls and guys, so I recommend checking out his sites. 2008 _is_ the Year of the Potato.

There's a photo gallery at the Chicagoist about the lightning storm that swept through Chicago last night. For those in the rest of the world, it was real, and it was spectacular.

You can buy a magnet of this comic here.

Really crappy attempt at hijacking an xkcd comic's influence on the infernet:

I should have kissed her.

I shouldn't have kissed her.

I should have kissed him.

I shouldn't have kissed him.
