Pirate TV Unleashed Print Email
Here is a follow up to science lab. It's a story-arc. 1 hour's worth of brainstorming on a Saturday morning, jacked up on coffee, brought this one to life. Plus, I'd been wanting to work on the science lab block people. Featured is the children's television show being interrupted by the pirate tv broadcast.

Watch as it unfolds.

On a separate note, I tooled up the minor animations in this episode with boostworthy, an Actionscript 3 tweening engine. The tweening engine is tight. What is not tight is AS3 performance when scaling. I spent a long time fighting this animation, trying to get the level of smoothness that I wanted. It originally had a zoom out / pan instead of the circle mask. Whenever I zoomed in past 200%, the performance choked. I spent a long time troubleshooting this (yanking out the boostworthy code, yanking out the bitmaps, converting complex vectors to bitmaps). After a lot of performance troubleshooting, I've come to the conclusion that flash can't perform as well as I'd like. Adobe wizards are working on an engine to marry c++ to actionscript. We'll see how it goes. In the meantime, I may spend more prolonged periods of time working on the backend of the art, rather than the art itself. Such is the life of an engineer.

This is a comic of what goes on at my job. As an engineer / scientist, I can vouch that this is 100% authentic.

Cosby Sweater Day Art Gallery Print Email
This is a prototype for some interactive art I'm working on. The first example is an art gallery (how meta). My ultimate goal is to continuously introduce new rooms or spaces for you to interact in. They will be interconnected, so new material will connect to old material. It's like a giant postmodern nonsensical MUD. Some rooms will be animations. Some will be spaces to walk around in. Some will be similar to old Sierra adventure games.

So, to give an example, I've created three rooms of an art gallery. Next I will probably add a couple more rooms of actual cosby sweaters. You will just walk from one room to the next. Think second life with stylized vector art and no flying wangs.

Cosby Sweater Day 2008 Print Email

It's finally here, folks. Screw National, it's Intergalactic Cosby Sweater Day. Friday, January 25th 2008.

I'm going to the thriftstore to unearth the most heinous, obnoxious, disgusting sweaters so we can celebrate the connection between our eyeballs and our cerebral cortex.

For anyone who cares, Intergalactic Cosby Sweater Day for next year is going to be Friday, January 23rd 2009. Don't let that confuse you, though. It's still a year away.
